Awards of $10,000 to USA young military dependents, ages 13 to 18, to recognize their exceptional ability to succeed despite the challenges of military family life. One award will be given to a young nominee who has devised an original and bold solution to address a local, regional, or global challenge. In addition to cash prizes, all awardees will also receive a laptop computer and other donated gifts and will be flown with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for the gala award presentation, during which senior leaders of each branch of service will present the awards.

The annual awards will recognize seven outstanding young people ages 13 to 18. Six of them will represent a branch of the armed forces — the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard — for their scholarship, volunteerism, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and other criteria while facing the challenges of military family life. The seventh award is the Military Child of the Year® Award for Innovation presented by Booz Allen Hamilton. This award goes to a military child who has designed a bold and creative solution to address a local, regional, or global challenge.

All seven Military Child of the Year® Award recipients will be flown with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C., to be recognized at the April 2020 gala, during which senior leaders of each branch of service will present the awards. Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Anyone may nominate a child for this award, so long as the child meets the following eligibility requirements:

- Child must be a legal military dependent. Status confirmed by DEERS enrollment form.
- Child must be between the ages of 13 and 18 at the time of nomination.

If the Veteran is a "military retiree", the child of a retired veteran is eligible to apply. A military retiree is any member or former member of the uniformed services who is entitled, under statute, to retired, retirement, or retainer pay on account of service as a member, or who receives military retired or retainer pay.

Children of Reserve service members are eligible and should apply under their corresponding service branch. Children must meet all eligibility requirements including evidence of their status as a military dependent.

Children of deceased service members are eligible to apply so long as they are treated as a military dependent (with DEERS enrollment and benefits) as a result of their deceased parent's service. Children of a parent KIA/MIA are generally eligible so long as they continue to be eligible for military dependent status.

Officers, directors, employees, and agents of Operation Homefront and its subsidiaries or affiliated organizations, and their immediate family members (parent, child, sibling, and spouse of each) and those living in the same households of each are not eligible to receive programs, services, grants, or donated goods intended for use by Operation Homefront’s clients.

Previous Military Child of the Year Award® Recipients, to include Innovation Award recipients, are no longer eligible.
