United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF)
Grants to USA, Canada, and International civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, independent and constitutional bodies, inter-governmental bodies, associations, and organizations for projects that promote and advance democracy around the world. Funding is intended for projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in the democratic process.
The large majority of UNDEF funds go to local civil society organizations, both in the transition and consolidation phases of democratization. Projects must fall under one or more of the following eight areas:
In the current round, projects on media and freedom of information are particularly welcome. This covers a range of topics, such as promoting citizen journalism, including in conflict and post-conflict settings; training journalists in legal know-how as well as personal safety and security, both physical and online; building peer support networks for freelance journalists; developing investigative journalism skills; understanding and advancing legislation for access to information; combating hate speech; developing public media literacy, with a focus on learning to digest material critically and to evaluate sources -- both online and in other media.
All applications are judged on their inherent quality and scored according to the following criteria:

Applicants can request a grant of a minimum of $100,000 and a maximum of $300,000. The majority of projects are granted no more than $250,000.
UNDEF projects are two years long. However, it is acceptable to UNDEF if a successful applicant completes a project in less than two years.
Please note that, if approved, your project will not commence until October 2020 at the earliest. Therefore, projects with activities that need to commence earlier than this will not be considered.
